Location In Marseille, the most ancient of French towns, and one of the oldest in Europe. The city is spaced out over the bay in which it sits like an amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean sea, and with the most impressive of rocky highlands behind it. Be sure to spend an afternoon around the Vieux port, and taste a famous Bouillabaisse. The rocky inlets `calanques` around the west and east of the town offer many a quiet beach with sometimes a marvellous hike or boat ride to access them. Chic seaside resort at the foot of the tall Cap Canaille cliff, with picturesque fishing port lined with attractive traditional pastel painted buildings and plenty of cafes and restaurants. Aix en Provence. 45 km. Stunningly beautiful and vibrant city, distinctively Provencal, with sunny squares filled with cafes, broad avenues lined with gigantic plane trees and tempting restaurants, and a substantial historical centre with elegant shops and attractive houses. Bandol. 50 km. Family seaside resort tucked in a cove between La Ciotat and Toulon. A vibrant harbour packed with fine shops and restaurants as well as a casino. Also renowned for its vineyards producing some of the best wines on the coast.

Most beautiful Provencal hill top and fortified village, in the heart of the Alpilles with brilliant view of Arles, the Camargue and the Alpilles. Officially classified and labelled as `one of the most beautiful villages in France`, it is one of the “must sees” in Provence. Arles. 100 km. Vibrant city of festivals, art and culture, with extraordinarily well-preserved Roman arena (the very same that was the scene of the Roman games in the 1st century!), backed by an equally impressive variety of other stones and monuments, both Roman and medieval. Linked with Gaugain, Van Gogh and Picasso. St Rémy de Provence. 100 km. As picturesque and Provencal as can be, with narrow winding streets, shady squares, fantastically old fountains, elegant shops, art galleries and plenty of bars and restaurants.
